Artists Mark Mitchell and Ryan Hill discuss Mitchell’s White Work.
Mark Mitchel is Based in Tucson Arizona, Mark Mitchell’s contributions span art, music, and theater. His magnum opus, Mark Mitchell: Burial, a performance and installation, was showcased in a solo exhibition at the Frye Art Museum, 2013, to critical and popular acclaim. In November 2016, Burial was presented in a solo exhibition in Beirut, Lebanon. Mitchell was shortlisted for the Neddy Artist Award at Cornish, 2015, for the Artist Trust Arts Innovator Award, 2016 and 2017 and was the recipient of the Kayla Skinner Award, Betty Bowen Committee, Seattle Art Museum, 2016. His work is in public and private collections, including that of the Frye Art Museum.
Ryan Hill Artist and Educator, born and raised in Los Angeles, Hill’s early projects were site-specific installations and performances in nonprofit, academic, and museum venues. These ongoing collaborations with other artists; including John Fleck, the movement collective SHRIMPS, artist Liz Young, Johanna Went, and choreographer Melinda Ring. His solo work includes drawing installations and video projections and have travelled internationally as part of group shows. Hill has worked in a variety of contemporary art museums, including MOCA Los Angeles, Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Yale University Art Gallery, and MOCA Tucson. He has taught at California Institute of the Arts, Otis College of Art and Design, George Washington University, American University, and Yale University. As an artist working in education, Hill is interested in how models outside of the field allow for more genuine engagement within institutional settings. He writes about the role of interpretation, continues to lead workshops at national museums, and has presented at international conferences. He has a MA in Film and television from UCLA and a MFA from California Institute of the Arts. He currently lives in Tucson, Arizona and teaches art at Pima Community College and The Drawing Studio.
