Christopher Wassell

Christopher Wassell is an American contemporary painter living/working in Tijuana, B.C. His chaotic yet carefully structured oil paintings inhabit a blurry landscape between figuration and abstraction. The obscured narratives, mysterious and evocative, are directly reflective of the painter’s personal experiences as he examines themes of memory loss, rhythmic architecture and the subjective nature of reality.

Christopher’s ties to the Tucson community date back to the 1990’s when, as a resident, he played drums and performed standup comedy under the tutelage of local impresario Chick Cashman as part of a weekly variety show hosted at the historic Hotel Congress. After living in San Diego for 25 years (during which he was a member of actionist/art ritual ensamble Crash Worship), Wassell moved his studio practice to Tijuana, where he is perpetually inspired by Baja California’s particular brand of Mexican surrealism.
