Meet Amos Paul Kennedy Jr.

“If bad printing is wrong, I don’t wanna be right.”
Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. is a printer, provocateur, and self-described “Humble Negro Printer” who walked away from a corporate career at 40 and decided to spend the rest of his life making things with his hands and pissing off the right people.

After discovering letterpress printing on a trip to Colonial Williamsburg, Kennedy ditched the corporate grind, got an MFA in graphic design, and went all-in on printing. Now based in Detroit, he runs Kennedy Prints!, a communal letterpress shop where he makes brutally funny, unapologetically political posters about race, power, history, capitalism, and whatever else is bothering him that day.

His prints are loud, colorful, cheap by design, and impossible to ignore. He uses old-school wood and metal type, oil-based ink, and humble materials to make work that looks like it might have been ripped off a telephone pole or smuggled out of some very strange underground newspaper.

His work has ended up in collections including the Library of Congress, MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Poster House. But Kennedy isn’t particularly interested in behaving like a conventional fine artist.

He calls himself an “Incorrigible Disturber of the Peace” and a “World-class Agitator.” And after more than three decades behind the press, he’s still using ink, paper, humor, and a healthy disregard for respectability to make trouble and agitate, agitate, agitate.

He’s coming to Tucson and bringing a whole lot of agitation and letterpress prints with him for a grand old Cash & Carry poster sale.
